Gilels + Rachmaninoff = Awesome
Posted by Kaleb Brasee on Saturday, January 17th, 2009 at 08:47 PM

I found this months ago on YouTube, and I still find myself watching it at least once a week. The song itself (Rachmaninoff Prelude Op. 23 No. 5) is fantastic, but Gilels' performance is simply perfect, with expression that blows away all the other ones I've heard. I had to go out and buy the music, but it's crazy hard – I still haven't gotten the first 30 seconds down yet.

Maybe it would help if I grew an awesome combover-style hairdo like his.

Thanks for the tip, first Youtube vid I watch since November and one of the best I can recall. Resonates with something like anxiety/tension in here, in a interesting way.

    FRIST PSOT
  3. The other interpretations don't come close

I was really surprised when I listened to the other major interpretations, because I thought they'd all be similar, at least in quality. However, the other ones sound way more mechanical than Gilels', don't flow nearly as well, and lack almost all of the emotion he puts into it. AND he times the tempo better, too.

Actually, I'm listening to what is supposedly Horowitz playing this song right now, and if it is him, I can't believe it – I thought he would be much better.

Oh and BTW Skyfort, you can't say FRIST PSOT unless you're really the frist psot.
